Author talk: Alan Dein on Candy, Andy and the Bearandas
Saturday, 2nd March, 2-3pm
Historian and broadcaster Alan Dein will give a fascinating illustrated talk about Candy, Andy and the Bearandas – the little known, and bizarre comic-book creation from the Gerry Anderson stable, famous for their hit television shows Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet.
Candy, Andy and their panda bear parents lived in the quintessential English village, and that village was Flamstead: the photography depicts locations around the village and local residents of that time.
Come along for a fun and informative talk about the strange world of Candy and Andy, set in and around Flamstead in the late 1960s. The talk will be followed by Q&A with the audience and a spot the village location competition to win a copy* of Alan’s new book Candy, Andy and the Bearandas.
*one lucky winner who can identify the most locations will win a copy of the book.
A poster for the event can be downloaded from here.
But how does Flamstead connect to the story of Candy and Andy? Alan Dein explains here.

Good morning, I would like to attend this but can find no information regarding parking, or where it is possible to eat in Flamstead – my searches suggest that both pubs The Spotted Dog and Three Blackbirds have closed? Is there any tourist information for the village that would help, please?
Dear Shaqui
We are very pleased you are coming. Flamstead is a small village. There are two or three car parks near the church but it is almost always possible to park in the streets nearby. It’s true that the Spotted Dog is currently closed. However the Three Blackbirds in the centre of the village and the Rose & Crown in nearby Trowley Bottom are both open and likely to be offering food on the day/evening of the book launch. However I strongly suggest you check directly with them first. I’ll update the “Visit Us” page at https://www.flamsteadheritage.org/visit/ with more information in the next few days, so thanks for prompting us. — Mark, Flamstead Heritage Project
Hello Mark,
Thank you for getting back to me. I was going by the Three Blackbirds Facebook page which indicated they were closing for business in June last year but I hope they have reopened.
I look forward to seeing further details posted here before the event.
Best, Shaqui
Yes, the Three Blackbirds re-opened 6 months ago under new management, but the old website lives on. I’ve put a link to the correct website in the Visit page on our site. Might be a good idea to give them a call though and book a table. — Mark
Thank you, will do.
